A nice remix. Nuff said.

Forget trying to shoehorn songs with vaguely relevant titles to the season into a classifiable Halloween playlist for cool peer points.
Matt Ear Farm takes it back to the old school with this mix of songs from horror soundtracks. What could be more creepy, scary or eerie than songs which soundtracked Halloween, Friday the 13th, Psycho, The Omen, Candyman, Poltergeist and more? Respect to Matt.
I heartily recommend Darragh’s
Frightening the living shite outta meself post also. Happy All Hallows Eve folks.
1. “Main Title and First Victim” by John Williams (from Jaws)
2. “Halloween” by John Carpenter (from Halloween)
3. “Moments of Terror” by Harry Manfredini (from Friday the 13th)
4. “The Knife” by Royal Scottish National Orchestra (from Psycho)

Looks like the server issues have been taken care of and the site is back. I pondered what it would be like to give up the ghost altogether while it was down but there was so many things I was itching to post that this really wasn’t an option. Seeing as the site is now a few days behind and myself and presumably, all of you are Picnic-bound, following shortly we will have the next instalment of Unknown Pleasures, our August Podcast and if I can squeeze it in, an Electric Picnic preview type post acts to check out. It’s good to be......

I recently got into a conversation about corporate blogging. The sort of conversation that starts with ‘what is a blog?’ and ends with ‘it’ll never work here’. And, as always, the killer argument for corporate blogging popped into my head 5 minutes too late.
A tractor in a field yesterday
Many years ago, I used to work for Case, the company that builds big red tractors. It was great work, especially as people understood what you did - none of this ‘I work in computers’ malarchy. Only problem was that we were working in Navan Ireland, with most of our colleagues based in Racine, just north of Chicago.
Not too much of a problem for the first 15 or so people - people who worked out of Chicago for the first 4 or 5 months. We were able to build up...

“List your favourite record from every year you’ve been alive.”
This is probably the nerdiest thing I’ve ever done but it was an interesting exercise. The idea was taken from here, here and here. In order to help you pick your favourites, you can use the extensive Wikipedia pages, the critics list at Pazz & Jop or with the help of an 1001 Albums to Hear Before you Die book. Here is my musical genealogy in list form. Explanations of my choices after the jump.
1982 Michael Jackson - Thriller
1983 R.E.M - Murmur
1984 RUN DMC - RUN DMC
1985 Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
1986 Beastie Boys - Licenced to Ill
1987 Michael Jackson - Bad
1988 Pixies - Surfer Rosa | Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions…
1989 Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique
1990 Jane’s...

Don’t you hate it when you spend months (or years) working on a pet project / book / mad take over the world idea, then somebody comes out with something even better?
Yep, it’s just happened to me. Years working on the idea of the ‘Wisdom or Crowds’ (even prior to web 2.0 in the shape of Red-Piranha). Month’s working on a Masters Dissertation on applying Web 2 techniques to the Finance industry (pdf link). And somebody comes out and does it even better.
Not just better. But much much better. The sort of better as in ‘If I had this earlier, I’d have just have copied it and changed the words around a bit’. The book is available from Manning as ‘Collective Intelligence in Action‘. A free, first chapter (Understanding Collective...

I don't thank my visitors enough. I'll try to make amends."Thank you", the 1,307 visitors who have looked at my profile. "Thank you, too", the 14,426 (including me) who have visited the blog. You have looked at pages here 22,120 times, which is great.I'd like to thank all the people who lost their instructions for erecting a gazebo. On quiet weeks, at certain times of the year, you form the majority of visitors and you tend to spend up to 15 minutes here. I suspect you're running in and out from the computer sticking lots of little metal tubes together. Fair play. I was doing the same only this afternoon.Special appreciation goes to those who find the blog by Googling the phrase (sometimes in ALL CAPS, sometimes not): "I PEED MY PANTS." I hope you're feeling a bit drier now.For everyone...

I had an absolute joyful holiday away from Ireland so it’s straight back in with an attempt to summarise the last ten days of links, news, songs and videos.
Ever wonder what happened to The Peth, the Super Furry side-project? A string of UK dates including the Green Man festival precedes the release of the album The Golden Mile on September 1st. There are new songs on the Myspace page and they have a new website. The band includes SFA drummer Dafydd Ieuan and also features the actor Rhys Ifans who let us not forget was the original vocalist for the Super Furries before Gruff came along. One song is titled ‘69 Fanny Street’ which is piquing my interest.
Nialler9’s favourite Baltimore rapper Height recently recorded a live session with SnowGhost. They’ve got...

I would also like to read more about comics. A lot of people I know read comics - why do so few of them write about them on their blogs? Get to it!image...
I really wish blogger would sort it out so that you could easily display links recent comments on the front page of a blog. I am partly saying this because I am, suddenly, getting some great waht is it maed comment action on my other...

After my amazing last post, I thought of never posting again. But here I am. I thought I would fill you in on forthcoming events in my amazing life. But first, some link action...1. Don't Stop Comma Believinnnnn brings you the latest adventures of secret agent James Momus2. Trashley illustrates the death of Charlton Heston, drawing an obvious but strangely not otherwise made point.3. "Queenie" is inviting people to nominate THE GREATEST BANDS OF ALL TIME. I cleverly forgot all about Sonic Youth.4. Randy McDonald likes t.A.T.u.5. People on the Internet are very mature. (requires login)And so to my amazing life. These are the things I am looking to go to over the next while. Maybe see you at them.26/4/2008 - dinner with spymates29/4/2008 - Japanese New Music Festival, featuring people from...
Perhaps if it had been updated in the last two...

But they tend not to feature pandas. One of these other people is "Rottenhat" (not his real name), whose blog is currently called The Colour of Memory. He writes about various things.I sometimes look at Whereof One Can Speak, a blog about comics, but sadly it is mostly about comics lacking in thrill power. And there is also New Music Strategies, in which this Andrew Dubber guy talks about the changing face of the music business and so on. He tends to be big on how you can't keep going with doing things the old way, and is not so hot on surefire ways to make a quick buck, so I have not used his blog to make myself rich yet. Which is a shame, as if he were to tell me how to become rich through almost no effort I would definitely throw him a couple of quid.image...

I interviewed Holy Fuck for State. It was with Graham Walsh from the band who was a top bloke. MP3 of their Radiohead remix there too.

Taken from my Myspace page, which is the only reliable gig calendar tool I have. These are all the shows I’m planning to go to until early June and it’s still probably missing a few.
What do you say? Care to make some more suggestions? What did I leave......

I’m testing out a new media player by Yahoo. It’s cool because you can playlist the whole page and listen at once. Let me know what you think and if there are any......

I’m thinking about doing a wee redesign soon enough on the blog and I’m looking for some help with a new logo. I’d like to get rid of the cassette and do something a bit more playful. I’d prefer to keep the colour scheme but I’m open to suggestions. I can pay, but not too much. Anybody interested - contact me for futher info for leave a......

But it’s OK because we’ve got daily updates from the State team!
Day One - Johnnie Craig
I’ll update this list as the week......

With thanks to the mighty Darragh (and his brother of course). I wanted to make this gig but couldn’t. At least I can catch it now.

But alas not to be. Maybe next year? No, definitely next year. I was looking at CubikMusik’s planned schedule for the week and turned green with envy. The bastard..
Anyhow, Cubik is an expat living in Austin and runs a super blog as you know , right? Well himself and a fellow team of Austin bloggers are putting on a SXSW event which I wish them all the best for. It’s called Above the Radar and has the fanciest multimedia flyer I’ve ever seen. Go see *. There will be some daily SXSW coverage on State this week and some competitions too!).
*If you are there obviously, otherwise come along to the pub with me and we can cry into our pints in solidarity like the true music nerds we are!...

The impressive mantelpiece round our house after the Choice Prize and Blog Award wins.
Super fun times last night at the 3rd annual blog awards where I won Best Music Blog for the second year running. I’ve come to realise I’m quite a humble fellah so I didn’t think it would happen. Luckily, the backlash has yet to set in! Major props to Aoife who was also nominated in the Music category and who I FORGOT TO THANK for being the voice of the nialler9 Podcast. Gah! Soz love but at least your gun is tres cool! Also Johnny from DownloadMusic.ie for sponsoring the award. I must echo last night’s sentiments about diversity in the Irish blogosphere, there are now so many blogs around each category that I was unaware of many of them. I’m particularly impressed by the...

Fuck Prizes Let’s Rave!
Casa Casey Courtney has some nice photos of the night....

At what other awards could you mingle with the Oscar nominees before the event? See them preparing the acceptance speeches, display their pre-show nerves and ask them for tips on the secret of their success? At the Irish Blog Awards - Business Blogger Meetup next Saturday March 1st , of course.
Details : The blog awards kick off at 7.30pm. So lets do it one hour earlier at 6.30pm. Same venue , Alexander Hotel, has a nice big foyer area. There’s no food at the awards themselves , but the hotel does a waiter service in the lobby if you’re just up ‘from the country’. Just look out for me (I’ve been told I look my photo on the top right. Which is not a good thing) , or any of the nominees (although I suspect Rowan and Michele aren’t as cartoonish in real...

It’s all quiet around here as we’re putting the finishing touches to our first issue of State Magazine. We still found time to record our first State Podcast (not to be confused with our State Mix Series) which takes the format of an informal round-table discussion. Guests Ham Sandwich join us to tell us about their Meteor win along with Tanya Sweeney, Phil Udell and our presenter JJ Worrall.
Have a listen
Myself and Eefs will be recording the next nialler9 Podcast as soon as I can find the......
According to Sarah Boxer:
In Japan neglected or abandoned blogs are called ishikoro, pebbles.
Seeing as my last post was in June of last year (see rodent, below), I might count it among them.

Should be OK now though. If you see anything broken or funny happening, do let me know. Ooh scary..
In other news, nialler9 was longlisted for Best Blog, Best Music Blog, Best Designed Blog and Best Post (two entries).
Unfortunately, one of the best posts was the only overtly negative thing I’ve written all year though I’d imagine it was nominated for the accompanying furore it produced. Maybe the award will be sponsored by Nokia? The other post was our December podcast which culled from the top voted Irish EP poll. Congrats to Aoife......

State has the relevant deets on the Choice Music Live event. Who’s playing, who’s presenting etc.
