The honour of
Fabric’s first proper artist album release has fallen to Portugal’s
Buraka Som Sistema and their debut album Black Diamond. Their sound has been invariably described as electro ghettotech and Euro baile funk but in reality, it is rooted in Kudoro - a genre which is thriving in Lisbon’s suburbs but was born in Angola. It shares tone and rhythm with that break-off track from earlier in the year
DJ Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’. The album, Black Diamond is well worth a look if these tunes (one featuring the “retired” M.I.A and another Pongolove) take your fancy.

Best video for the best song on the
Ladyhawke album (which has six brilliant songs and seven average songs). The vid takes its cue from the watercolour album

I finally got around to listening to the Friendly Fires album and I’m enjoying quite a lot. My initial judgement was coloured by a performance on BBC where I was blinded by the lead singer’s moccasins / short-fitted trouser combo. Unlike the footwear, their music is an adaptable, seductive beast inspired by ’80s synth pop and funky dance music. It kinda reminds me of Foals do disco and that’s a lovely thing.
Jape has been touring with these guys in the UK (who was great last night in the Button Factory by the way) and they have remixed ‘Strike Me Down’ into a 6 minute ambient percussive tune. A good match for each other I’d say.

Got the new Simian Mobile Disco remix album Sample and Hold today. I love the way it’s named after this. I’m not actually a huge fan of Attack Sustain Release but ‘Sleep Deprivation’ is great as is that remix they did for The Kills way back. Also their recent FabricLive mix (check out my interview with them) was something I never mentioned here but is also really good. It’s got Green Velvet on it so it has to be.
I’m liking some of the stuff I hear here though which includes remixes from Shit Robot, Pinch, Cosmo Vitelli and Silver Apples (which in itself is very random). There’s also a Chrome Hoof mix not on the promo which I’d really like to hear. Anyway, here’s a sample of the record, a remix of ‘Sleep Deprivation’ by...

If someone asked me what Flying Lotus sounds like, I would say head jams. Intense, precise, ambient, organic, electronic, beat-filled, groove-laden, mind-altering head jams.
Having criminally left his Los Angeles album on a pile for the last 6 weeks, I finally got around to giving it a proper spin. I loved his debut 1983 and the Reset EP from last year but this is on a whole other level. Where those releases were largely hip-hip rhythms, Los Angeles blurs the line between hip-hop, ambient, electronic and dubstep beats probably more suitably describe as soundscapes. But intense, precise, ambient, organic, electronic, beat-filled, groove-laden, mind-altering soundscapes, see?

Vivian Girls - Tell The World
Looks like my plans to feature unknown artists exclusively has been scuppered already. The reason: 95% of the music I get sent is utter shite. There I said it. Most of it comes from across the Atlantic and usually it’s some twee band from Atlanta or Seattle and the press release uses the word “songwriting” as if it’s some futuristic concept. It all sounds the same. Soft indie rock trying to sound like Interpol or Sufjan or whatever’s cool right now. I still try to listen to everything I get...

This is the album that DJ Shadow should have made after The Private Press. It’s a throwaway comment sure but it helps go some way to explaining just what Alfred Darlington aka Daedelus has accomplished with, what looks like his tenth major release. The producer has finally made good on his long-evident promise with one of the best releases of the year. An electronica album at its core, Daedelus channels hip-hop, R&B rhythms and dubstep basslines to superb effect. The result is 15 tracks of polychromatic genius which bears plenty of repeated listens (which was the major problem with his previous releases). There are audio detours aplenty with some great use of archaic samples. The album is so good I had problems picking out which songs would accurately represent the work.
I...

There is a bookshop in Rathgar I pass occasionally. It has the opening hours marked on the door. Usually when I pass, it is a Sunday and the shop is closed. No Bernard Black hiding behind the curtain sneering at potential customers, just a simple, cute message printed on Sunday’s timetable - ‘Reading Time!’.
Similarly, Sunday is frequently ‘Listening Time’ in my house. I gather up all the demos, albums, digital files, vinyl (if I’m lucky) and spend a large part of the afternoon catching up with what I did not have time to listen to during the week. Yesterday afternoon, I picked out a slew of tunes for this April’s podcast to be recorded this week when there is time. I still have an inbox stuffed with about 120 emails I haven’t read yet.

This was prompted by the rather wonderful new M83 track ‘Kim & Jessie’ which was obviously directly inspired by all things adolescent and 1980s. There’s been a bit of a non-ironic 80s revival going on lately with stuff like Neon Neon par example. Before that we had Donnie Darko and its distinctive soundtrack which is referenced on the Saturdays=Youth cover art along with The Breakfast Club.

The best place in town for a few pints of Buckfast and an electro knees-up in a pub is celebrating its first birthday. Or Yet Another Paper Planes Remix
Pedro alerted me to this DFA remix of “Paper Planes” after my Holy Fuck remix post earlier this month. I’ve since dug up with full-length version of it which will feature on Paper Planes: Homeland Security Remixes which also includes remixes by Afrikan Boy & Rye Rye, Big Bun & Rich Boy, Scottie B and a DJ Eli remix of “Bamboo Banger”. The Holy Fuck remix doesn’t feature, neither does the recent Adrock Beasties remix though.
This is another superb reworking as you’d expect from Murphy and Goldsworthy.

The original was kinda cheesy to begin with but this video has gorgonzola on a platter for me now. It reminds me of those mid-90’s hi-NRG dance numbers that came out of the US which were totally suspect then, except updated for ‘08: hipster DJs in hipster baseball caps, Kid Sister rapping instead of an R’n'B singer giving it socks, zeitgeist-friendly neon graphics, dance-offs and a general novelty vibe. Kid Sister comes across as eminently likeable all the same. Still it kinda reminds me of this:

Earlier last week, it was reported that Justice had a mix rejected from the Fabric series. The reason seems to be because of its short length. The mix has been made available at Urb and is quite an eclectic one all-round. Recommended.

My laptop’s Christmas present from me was an impolite wine spillage on the keyboard resulting in a tedious copy and paste requirement job for some letters of the alphabet. So I will keep this in a brief list format. After this, I’m done with 2007 and making lists for another year. Thanks to all the readers and those who left comments, downloaded the podcast and got into the music. 2008 is going to be an interesting year….......

A few of us went to Seomra Spraoi on Friday night. There was a bit of a hooley going on with the Alphabetset heads and Radio na Life making most of the noise. Hats off to Sarsparilla, Fringe, Prince Kong, T-Woc, Wiggle, Johnny Alpha and A Force for providing the punters with some freakin awesome tunes through a satisfyingly bass-heavy system, and ultimately all at Seomra Spraoi for organising the bash in the first place - nuff respec. Needless to so though, members of an Gardai Siochana did arrive at around 3 or so to boot the door down and crack down on any fun being had - even though the music had already stopped and people were leaving. They just can’t help themselves I guess.
At one stage Fergal from Radio na Life was playing some class techno. I used to it listen to a lot, but...

I want those strip lights that Simian Mobile Disco are using. I want a full set like the Animal Collective last week. Are they even called strip lights? Anyone know? Anyway, seeing as it’s Friday here are some tunes for your weekend escapades.......

Listening to Holy Fuck can be confusing. It sounds like so much other music you’ve heard but something’s missing. That is because this Toronto band’s ethos is to make electronic-based music without the techniques that laptops could afford them such as looping, backing tracks, programming. They’ll employ all manner of lo-fi instruments to get the sound they want.
Despite their rubbish name and this seemingly limited ethos, they have made an exhilarating album in LP, which is the my standout album of the last month or so. Kicking it off with a recorded live track, you get the impression that Holy Fuck excel more live than on record but that doesn’t stop them coming up with some serious dance grooves.
October’s Podcast tune “Lovely Allen”...

Wow. There was no better way to kick off my invigorating temporary unemployment and the four night run of gigs this week (Modeselektor, MJEX/SEBP, 65 Days of Static and Animal Collective) than the absolute banger of a show last night from the German duo. Myself and Mike danced our Buckfast off with the most enthusiastic crowd I’ve seen in Dublin for quite some time. It helps that the Tivoli is a great venue for a wee dance and that Modeselektor were dropping great tune after great tune, hosing the crowd in champagne, buckets of ice and water. They even passed out their clutch of free beer to the front row, nice chaps they are.
The highlights for myself were “2000007″, “Weed wid da Macka”, the eruption when “Kill Bill no.4″ was played,...
