Take me back to the Picnic maaan.. via nialler9 September 5th, 2007 at 15:01

image (To be sung to the tune of “North American Scum”) I think that was the best festival weekend I’ve ever had. My brain is still reeling from it. Anyhow, here’s how it went down musically @ Electric Picnic: Friday was a bit of a disaster. We left Dublin @ 4pm and got to Stradbally at 10pm, thus, missing Bjork. I heard “Declare Independence” bouncing off a church in Stradbally town. It sounded great. We were all getting cabin fever a little bit in the car so it was a relief to get inside. LCD Soundsystem’s set was good not great and was aided by a decent atmosphere. “All my Friends” WAS euphoric yet perhaps “New York I love you” is not a great choice for an encore. Hello “Someone Great” ?? LCD Soundsystem -...

An Spailpín Fánach’s Farewell to Music via An Spailpín Fánach August 30th, 2007 at 09:10

I don’t listen to music very much anymore. I certainly don’t buy it. I’ve been moving house lately, and as I pack up the CDs and go through them I look at the odd one and think “why in God’s name did I buy this crap?” And then the invariable answer comes – because I read in a magazine that it was cool.I name and shame: Trout Mask Replica, by Captain Beefheart. Forget everything you read – it’s garbage. There is no other word.I used to buy a lot of music, and then, slowly, I began to find that there was less and less stuff I wanted to listen to. Once you’ve caught up on the classics – Stones, Who, Beatles, you know yourself – you find that the current crop doesn’t really measure up. Is there any record that sounds quite as revolutionary as Astral Weeks or Forever...

Electric Picnic - My ruff guide.. via nialler9 August 29th, 2007 at 16:15

image A few people have asked for my recommendations for this years festival so I’ll try and do a roundup of stuff I’m looking forward to and you can take from it what you will. As a caveat, every decent festival experience should contain elements of surprise so y’know, take a few wrong turns here and then. MP3 blowout at the end of the post. Friday Start the day with Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain who play all-ukelele covers of Ms Dynamite, The Clash, The Undertones, Kate Bush and Nirvana. A fitting start. Headliners LCD Soundsystem should provide a bit of euphoria when “All my Friends” drops but I have a niggling feeling the live show won’t be up to scratch. I hope I’m wrong. FYI: James Murphy is DJing in Antics tonight. my first time seeing...

Prelude to UNKLE via nialler9 May 15th, 2007 at 14:55

image Today, sees the release of a limited edition UNKLE 7″ ep A Prelude to War Stories, basically a sampler for the forthcoming third album War Stories on 9th July. James Lavelle has described the album as “rawer than ???Psyence Fiction’ and Never, Never, Land although it???s more in the vein of the traditional singer/songwriter. If the first record was UNKLE does hip hop and the second record was UNKLE does electronic, then this one is like UNKLE does rock.” I have a soft spot for UNKLE ever since I received Psyence Fiction (I like successful genre bending albums) as a birthday present nearly 10 years ago. HOLY SHIT! On War Stories, Lavelle and File will be joined by Ian Astbury (The Cult), The Duke Spirit, Gavin Clark, Autolux and older contributors Josh Homme...

New Beastie Boys - The Rat Cage! via nialler9 May 15th, 2007 at 17:42

image From the forthcoming instrumental album The Mix Up! Seems like it’s going to be somewhere between The In/Sound from Way Out! compilation and instrumentals from Hello Nasty. Apparently an edited version, it’s a bass riff-driven, guitar jammin’ tune that sounds a bit like a part of Aesop Rock’s recent Nike mix. MP3 Hosted at Spine Magazine. Don’t forget every day at the moment the Beasties’ Official website is streaming a different video clip with the song as the soundtrack. It’s the typical Beasties playing pageant we know and love. Somebody has compiled the video into one handy bloggable entity, so watch below. Win tickets to Electric Picnic! via nialler9 May 16th, 2007 at 12:57

image You may or may not have noticed that things were quiet here last week. The reason was because in my real job, we have been working hard on an election game for Ireland.com. It’s a fun little Flash game designed to help you pick your own “DIY Cabinet” from sample candidates running in the election. It went live this morning and we’re very happy with it. But what has this got to do with music? Well, there’s a nice prize for the person who has had the closest match to the Dail as it is announced by the newly appointed Taoiseach - Weekend Tickets to Electric Picnic. So potential EP tickets AND you get to LEARN more about the candidates? What more could a Modern Irelander want? Go forth and Rock the Vote! Electric Picnic review via nialler9 September 5th, 2006 at 21:32

Normality can be a hard thing to cope with after such an ecstatic weekend at Electric Picnic. The last festival of the summer came and went over the weekend (way too fast) with some amazing music and great memories. My body is sore, my throat is raw, I’m bloody tired but I wouldn’t swap it for anything. Almost all of the acts I planned to see, didn’t disappoint. Highs Spank Rock - Even without MC Amanda Blank, these boys rocked the Bodytonic tent and were the perfect start to the weekend. According to MC Spank Rock they’ll be back in November so keep an eye out. Mogwai - Finally got to see them live. Mogwai fear Satan was great. Not as loud as I expected them to be. Massive Attack - Infinitely better than Oxegen a few years ago. The sound at the Main stage was...

Just in case you didn’t read it… via In Fact, Ah August 31st, 2006 at 11:29

image Nialler has an excellent preview to Electric Picnic mentioning some acts which could easily slip under the radar. Half the acts he mentions I also strongly recommend, as for the other half of them I'll say thank you for the heads up! Sinead also has posted her must see acts including a few interesting nominations in the "less well known" camp.Sinead and Nialler have covered most bases and more, the few crumbs they've left that I've my eye on to try to catch are Tiefschwarz, Neosupervital, Andy Weatherall, Metro Area, Francois K, Laurent Garnier Live, The Rapture (I'm hearing good things from people who have heard the upcoming album), Deus, Michael Franti and Bloc Party for hopefully shed loads of new stuff.I know nobody will ever get to see everything, but we can try!tags:Electric...

nialler9’s guide to Electric Picnic 06 via nialler9 August 30th, 2006 at 22:27

image OK, so it seems it’s Electric Picnic week on the blog, so I thought I would put up some music from bands that are playing the festival this year. We alll know what most of the headline acts are we want to see so this post is going to highlight some of the smaller acts playing. I hope you find something you like and If you’re going, go see the band! Simple.   1. Tilly and the Wall Foggy Notions Stage Sat- 20:00-20:45 From Omaha, Nebraska, at first glance they appear to be just another indie pop band with infectious melodies and good time music, live they are said to be a different prospect live. Known for their energetic fun handclapping shows, their uniqueness is emphasised by foregoing of a drummer for much of their songs and instead relying on the amplified tap...

Cut Chemist is coming via nialler9 July 11th, 2006 at 22:39

image It’s a good week for new releases this week with new releases from Sufjan Stevens, some guy from Radiohead and Cut Chemist whose new album “The Audience’s Listening” I have been anticipating since I heard the pre-released song - ‘The Garden’ a few months ago. Well I picked up a copy and it’s been on constant rotation since. I was worried that the album wouldn’t live up to my expectations, but there was no need. His work with Ozomatli, Jurassic 5 (which he left in May 2006), with DJ Shadow on ‘Brainfreeze’, ‘Product Placement’ and last year’s DJ mix ‘The Litmus Test’ has cemented his reputation as one of the best DJs out there but on his debut solo album he has raised the bar even higher recording...

Electric Picnic Line Up Additions via In Fact, Ah April 21st, 2006 at 11:01

So yesterday Bodytonic announced some of their line-up for Electric Picnic. Despite my co-contributor Padraig's assertion elsewhere on this site that Bodytonic wouldn't deliver a line up with big names, they have signed a couple of acts that sound extremely attractive: LAURENT GARNIER LIVE featuring Benjamin Ripert (keyboard) and Philippe Nadaud (sax)TIEFSCHWARZCOLDCUT LIVEANDREW WEATHERALLMETRO AREABODYTONIC SOUND SYSTEMKRAFTY KUTSRADIO SOULWAX LIVEIAN POOLEYBACKLASH DJ'sNATHAN FAKE LIVEFISH GO DEEP feat Tracey KelliherDANCEPIGTODD TERJESPLITLOOPCHARLES WEBSTERHYSTEREOSTEREOTONIC DJ's In particular, live performances by Nathan Fake and Laurent Garnier jump right out.
