Hey the blog is three years old today! There are two ways to interpret this: 1) Major loser 2) Music fanatic (Is there really any difference?). So here’s a special post for a special day. I asked
DJ Robbie Coffey to
once again to put his skills to use for the occasion and this is what he concocted. Just check out the sweet tracklisting, it’s full of killer grime, dubstep and hip-hop and has some of my favourite tunes from the past few years.

I first mentioned Neon Neon back in
April 2007 when Gruff and Boom Bip posted ‘Trick or Treat’ and since then Stainless Style has been released and has become one of my top 5 albums of 2008. So to say I was looking forward to their Irish gig last night is an understatement. The “biographical show / election special” (to quote Gruff) was packed. It was one of two large near-to-full capacity gigs happening on a Tuesday night: MGMT in Ambassador and Neon Neon in Tripod. I wonder how Ida Maria in Whelan’s fared?
One of the subconscious delights I have of gig-going is watching the reaction of the security personnel charged with protecting the stage and crowd down front during a performance. Mick Jagger could be sticking his willy in the frets of Keith...

I must commend Analogue on their recent
free CD - most excellent stuff (
and I’m not the only one who thinks so). In a recent
freebie post, this song popped up twice as recommended by Paddy and Colly.
‘Left for Dead’ is one of those unassuming pieces of music which quietly invites itself for tea and within hours is cosily wrapped up in your favourite blanket in the living room. You don’t mind though, as it brings calmness and warmth with it. It’s snowing outside. I’m going to grab a cuppa.

Some real highlights this weekend for me.
Daedelus absolutely killed his set on Friday night. What a performer (see video below) - he’s the apotheosis of a DJ - playing his own tracks amidst a gazillion others with a big smile on his face and his hands darting around his
Monome box.
Steinski was better as a speaker at Sweet Talk on Thursday than as a mostly perfunctory DJ on Friday though it was nice to see him up there rocking his old nerdy emotionless self complete with nerdy trackball mouse selectah style.
Also good fun at !Kaboogie’s show on Thursday in ALT with
Ed Devane and
Ebola. Didn’t stick around for Mad EP though.
M83 were brilliant in Vicar Street and really took advantage of the soundsystem there. Precise serene synths, loads of “dum dum ba...

Really great gig. I’m so glad my last minute decision to head in paid off. Much of Pivot’s set was like that bit in one of the Star Wars movies where the sound designer got the most jarring and perfectly digital noise to represent a homing missile following an spaceship. The venue was swathed in clouds of synthetic noise and analogue signals pushing each each other into contorted shapes.
The drummer is at the core of what they do. His robotic jazz-infused drumming was so freeform and expressive yet so precise. When he let loose, he hit the drums with such a frantic, fast pace it was like he was trying to break a speed drumming record.
As a trio with laptops, synths, guitars and drums, they let their songs break down long enough that they had no choice but to piece...

Taking place in Andrew’s Lane from 11pm this Thursday, !Kaboogie and Foggy Notions present the Dublin debut of Canadian Matthew Pears aka Mad EP. His music takes in strands of from hip-hop and jungle and is notable for his use of live cello on tracks. Some of his music sounds like Owen Pallett-esque baroque pop through a glitchy blender. Nice. Check his blog.
Ebola has been knocking out wonky electronic music on Wrong Music for years now dabbling in breakcore, gabber and recently, dubstep except with his own unique cosmic take on the genre. Remember that free Predator inspired breakcore EP he did? Classic. Download it at Netlab.
Completing the line-up is Ed Devane who lives around the corner from my gaff and has a homemade an impressive electronic stell guitar. Thursday though,...

DEAF takes place once again next week and this year sees its most accessible and interesting line-up. There are a host of promoters involved from !Kaboogie to Choice Cuts to Note to Foggy Notions to Maximum Joy to Nightflight and on and on. A real all-inclusive list. One of those promoters, Forever Presents has kindly gifted me FOUR pairs for each of the following shows:
Trans Am plus guests Prostitute, Oct 24, The Village
M83 plus guests Channel One and The Domino State, Oct 24, Vicar St.
All you’ve got to do is leave a comment with the title (and link if possible) to a song you can’t stop playing and why. Do tell which show you’d prefer also. Comment lines closed on the 21st October.

I hate that name. I haaate it. It’s the ultimate “sad-loser-in-his-bedroom-playing-plinky-plonky-music-on-his-keyboard-in-the-dark” stage name. Totally emo. Pity then, that Owen Ashworth’s music is mostly sublime and not at as depressing as the name suggests (only just). If you know his album Etiquette (and if you don’t get it), you’ll know what to expect: melancholy-tinged, synth-led story songs.
This new EP, Town Topic consists of thirteen short instrumental pieces, book-ended by the two vocal tracks that were recorded specifically for the film Stay The Same Never Change by Laurel Nakadate.

Trust me. that artwork is way better than seeing a press shot of this husband and wife duo from California. They are not deformed or anything. I just think this represents the music much better than a boring press shot ever could. The name is apt as the music is full of Middle Eastern scales and tones to the point where a Pungi or snake-charming flute plays a major part. Take those influences and smash them into electronica, dub rhythms and get the wife to sing/shout over the top and you’ve got something close to brilliance.
Slap on the wrist for me for not posting this back in frickin’ August when I got it. I kept holding onto it for a while and then I thought I put it in a podcast. Duh. Anyway here’s two songs from The Basta EP.

I’ve always had a soft spot for David Holmes. In fact he was one of the first leftfield artists whose discographies I explored deeply alongside people like DJ Shadow. Everything he has done has been superb. From Let’s Get Killed to Bow Down to the Exit Sign (’69 Police’ is still one of my favourite songs ever) to the Essential Mix compilation to The Free Association and beyond (though I have to admit I’m less familiar with his film soundtracks). His new album The Holy Pictures is inspired by his hometown of Belfast (and named after a pub) and the death of his parents. It’s also notable because it features Holmes as the main vocalist for the first time ever. The album is rooted in the same territory as psychedelic-era Primal Scream, Death in Vegas with...

I’ve been a big fan of former Argentinean comedian Juana Molina for a couple of years now so it’s good to see her return with a new album Un Día and gigs in Dublin on October 9th and Cork on the 11th. She was brilliant last year in Crawdaddy and last month at the Picnic.
Un Día is more abstract, more layered and less accessible (each song is on average 7 minutes long) than previous album Son but still utterly captivating. Try the title track on for size. Hypnotic.
The lyrics translated are:
“One day I will sing the songs with no lyrics and everyone can imagine for themselves if it’s about love, disappointment, banalities or about Plato.”

So the move from Lugalla, Wicklow to the more central location of Royal Hospital Grounds in Kilmainham mattered little on the day as the music was taking place in a large tent. It would have been nice to be surrounded by mountains but I’ll gladly trade the setting for the sunny weather we got yesterday. The actual site was a little small and like a cramped Electric Picnic which lasted for a long afternoon and evening complete with flags and a small massage area. One bar for 5000 people? Hmmmm.
The Jimmy Cake and Soulwax were both good but it was all about Kraftwerk who were fun, fun, fun but in a tightly controlled and very German way. 2 hours of music non-stop. The setup is impressive. Five projectors were utilised to show their unique visuals which is a huge selling point for me....

Thanks to Gambra on Thumped for directing me to this apparently very limited split CD from the Mogwai/Fuck Buttons tour. Mogwai tackle ‘Colours Move’ while Fuck Buttons re-interpret ‘Mogwai Fear Satan’.
Fuck Buttons’ album has grown on me exponentially while Mogwai’s new one The Hawk is Howling is another solid follow-on from Mr. Beast. More on that later. How about a thought for an attempt at the best song title ever, included here for posterity, from the Batcat EP entitled ‘Stupid Prick Gets Chased by the Police and Loses His Slut Girlfriend’. Yessss.

Ben Jacobs, the man responsible for two fo the best gigs I’ve seen in my lifetime is back with a new album, 6 years after the brilliant Mastered By Guy at the Exchange. I’m pretty sure Leagues O’ Toole is responsible for me getting into that album as he raved about it so much back then. His new album Parallel Error Beheads You is the same madness you’d expect. Vital madness. Like a man who lives in a Teletubby land and plays with synths made of jelly all day and sings about jumpers, Google images, threeways on eBay and the Glycaemic Index.
The entire album was recorded with his trusty Commodore Amiga 500 used as a mixing desk/controller. Says Mr. Tundra - “There are no modern-day computers on this record. My PC is strictly for emails and Photoshopping the...

Richie Egan has bestowed upon us his inspired cover of that seminal 1982 paean ‘Africa’ which he recorded last week. The thing I remember most about Toto are their striking album covers. Toto IV was my favourite cover and that’s the album that ‘Africa’ resides on. As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti, Richie hopes you like it.
