Antoin O Lachtnain has noticed that An Post, Ireland’s incumbent postal delivery service, has begun providing partial web-based access to GeoDirectory, the national address database. The PrecisionAddress Application was created by Precision Marketing Information (PMI), an An Post subsidiary. After registration, users can enter a single partial address to be verified (for instance a house number and street name) — where this results in multiple possible valid postal addresses the user can select one address from a list. Free geocoding services (such as geocoder.us for the USA) are critical to the development of useful spatially-aware applications for the public, such as online mapping services, since coordinates are fundamental to the analysis and processing of spatial information.
