From the same guy who brought you a remix of Joanna Newsom’s ‘Book of Right On’ on the March Podcast, comes this slightly less contentious reworking of Yeasayer’s ‘Sunrise’ by Pocketknife. It’s mostly a beat re-adjustment but I really like it, as I do the original.
Pocketknife has an EP with his mate Cousin Cole out called Canyon Dancing and this remix appears on it.

The best album I’ve heard in the last month or so is easily the just-released eponymous album by
Little Joy. The band are notable for being a new project by the drummer of
The Strokes, Fabrizio Moretti. Although he only provides backing vocals to main singer Rodrigo Amarant and more sporadically Binki Shapiro, the stamp of The Strokes is all over it, albeit a mostly acoustic one. It sounds like it was recorded in Hawaii such is the breezy, carefree tone of the music. It was recorded in LA as it turns out, still polar opposite to Moretti’s normal New York home. The band is named after a cocktail lounge just down the street from the place they recorded the album.
Little Joy is an apt moniker for a 11 songs and 31 minute LP of understated and winsome beauty. It was pretty hard...

There’s a
facebook campaign just set up to help
Jape’s superb next single ‘Phil Lynott’ get to Nollaig #1. I’d love to see it happen myself. What do you think?
Listen to the tune..

I really hope this girl is massive next year. She was a sparsely attended highlight at Electric Picnic. Here’s her new video. She plays as part of the Bestival Reunion on the 14th November in Tripod.

A superb live version of Owen Pallett’s ‘The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead’ segued into Feist’s ‘My Moon, My Man’ by a Meath band I hadn’t heard a note of until last week. If anything the darkness of the footage adds to the cover.

Au Revoir Simone have a remix album of The Bird of Music out on November 11th called Reverse Migration which features remixes amongst others from Jean-Benoît Dunckel of Air, Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, The Teenagers, Best Fwends and this gratifying Ruff and Jam remix of ‘Lark’. The band are currently working on a follow-up to The Bird of Music.

I haven’t paid attention to Matt and Kim since that Flosstradamus remix but this new one is cute (as the happy cult these two are obviously in).

Yoome is a collaborative project of Chicago rapper Serengeti (who I posted a song by last April), New Zealand indie-folk singer Renee Louise Carafice, and Chicago producer Tony Trimm. This song leans to the more sparse, indie-pop side of things with just Renee on vocals. The album is called The Boredom of Me.

Times New Viking (8pm), No Age (8.45pm) and Los Campesinos! (9.45pm) in Whelan’s, tonight. Only a few tickets left for this so beware. I’m quite looking forward to it now. Times New Viking were pretty loud and quite humourous at Primavera, I’ve really warmed to No Age in the last while and despite Los Campesinos! first album not being something that I liked at all (AT ALL), their second album We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed released eight months after that debut is a doozy. A much less annoying (but still occasionally cringeworthy lyrically) affair. It was produced by John Goodmason who also produced the Fight Like Apes record. I keep thinking of them as a Broken Social Scene Junior these days.

Duncan Lloyd is better known as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist from Maxïmo Park but as a solo artist he has just released the album Seeing Double. Many solo side projects can tend to be below par versions of the original band’s music, thankfully not the case here. With studio time kept to a minimum this record has a refreshingly flawed, rough and raw sound, which is reminiscent of earlier Graham Coxon solo work and Mwng by the Super Furries. Lloyd’s warm and slightly fuzzy vocals and recognizable guitar playing compliment one another perfectly to produce a record of melodic indie at its best.
‘Suzee’ is easily the catchiest song I have heard in a long, long time. It exemplifies his “no frills” approach to writing and recording in under two and...

I finally got around to listening to the Friendly Fires album and I’m enjoying quite a lot. My initial judgement was coloured by a performance on BBC where I was blinded by the lead singer’s moccasins / short-fitted trouser combo. Unlike the footwear, their music is an adaptable, seductive beast inspired by ’80s synth pop and funky dance music. It kinda reminds me of Foals do disco and that’s a lovely thing.
Jape has been touring with these guys in the UK (who was great last night in the Button Factory by the way) and they have remixed ‘Strike Me Down’ into a 6 minute ambient percussive tune. A good match for each other I’d say.

This new EP from GPO prove why they are one of the better new Irish bands around at the moment. Three reasons. They are 1. Fun. 2. Fun. 3. More fun. They write catchy indie-pop songs that are under two-minutes and feature xylophones - an instrument with a special place in my heart ever since I learnt how to spell the word from an early age.
I’m really enjoying it. Thanks GPO.

I’ve been listening to Takka Takka’s new album Migration sporadically lately. It’s slowly getting under my skin. It’s the Brooklyn band’s second LP and it was produced by the drummer of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sean Greenhalgh. For those impressed by indie guest appearances, the album also features Bryan Devendorf of The National (which is fitting as the bands certainly occupy the same atmosphere), Lee Sargent of CYHSY, Olga Bell of Bell, and Charles Burst. Their sound is one of brooding rock thematics, electronic soundscapes and torch-burning acoustics. It’s a dense album to get into which is why it has taken me so long to get around to mentioning it here.
Gabe Levine of Takka Takka says the album was born out of his mother’s decision to become...
Villagers via nialler9 September 30th, 2008 at 12:19

Those saddened by the demise of The Immediate may soon be rejoicing as Conor O’ Brien steps out from backing band duties for Cathy Davey to release an EP under the moniker of Villagers in December or January. Two songs are posted on his myspace at the moment - ‘The Meaning of The Ritual’ which transmutes from humble organ beginnings to a spectral end and the deceptively sparse yet comely ‘Home’.
Conor has gathered a band together for recording purposes which includes drummer James Byrne, Cormac Curran on keys, Danny Snow on bass (both of One Day International) and Tommy McLaughlin on guitar. It’s a promising start. Keep an eye out here for a future exclusive.

I’ve been playing MJEX’s new album From the Word Go these past few weeks. It’s a natural step forward from 2006’s Now This I Have To Hear with a more eclectic mix of live arrangements taking in a smattering of everything: hip-hop, funk, R&B, reggae, indie, classical and electronic. Lyrically, the duo are stepping outside themselves by addressing much more than the personal this time around including politics, the urgency of youth, relationships, connections, action and consequence. Indeed, both Messiah J and The Expert contributed to the lyrics this time around.
There are a number of stand-outs on an already solid collection including the Delorentos’ guest appearance on the missile rush of ‘Geography’ (and soon to be second single after...

The video for Robotnik’s forthcoming b-side relegates the song in status but not in catchiness. His Pleasant Square album contains some great songs on it and this is one of them.

I’m liking what I hear on the School of Seven Bells myspace. I first heard of them when they appeared on Prefuse 73’s album last year. They are from Brooklyn. They are three strong. Claudia and Alejandra are twins. They have a single with the songs ‘Half Asleep’ and ‘Caldo’ on it. Both of them can be heard at RCRD LBL. A full-length is forthcoming on Ghostly International called Alpinisms in early November. This is a song from it.

Is this the most anticipated Irish debut album of the last five years?
It certainly seems so. Live broadcasts on Phantom, BBC Sessions, high visibility UK support slots, a buzz here and the UK, album streams, magazine articles, Number 2 in NME’s 10 Hopes of the Near Future, blog posts galore, forum debate, regular radio rotation. Everyone is weighing in with their own expectations of the four-piece’s debut so I suppose I will too.
In a review I wrote over the weekend due to be published in State very soon I said “The entire album walks the line between pop and alternative perfectly without dipping into procedure”. It’s a great album, a superb debut from a vital band. It might not even be the best debut album released in Ireland this year but by their own...

Au - ‘Are Animals’
You may have heard of Au, an experimental pop band from Portland. This song sounds a little like Animal Collective I’ll admit, but do AC have a 20-strong vocal chorus? No? Well Au do, I shit you not. This is from their album Verbs.
Oceansea - ‘The Whimsical River’

That is hands down one of the best band names I’ve ever heard. A pop culture reference that fits the band’s exuberance so well. While CSS spin off in a 90s rock retread and therefore shedding what made them fun in the first place, these Seattle teenagers are ready and waiting for the electro-pop crown. Some of you will run from these puerile, neon-clad hipster youth and their silly songs and so be it. But after listening to hours of gloomy indie music in my emails, I’m glad this band of teenagers exist. I hope these guys are massive in a year.
Their debut album Glistening Pleasure is out and about now in the US. Song titles include ‘Me + Yr Daughter’, ‘Slow Motion Tag Team’, ‘Holding Hands in the Shower’, the best song about...

Someone tagged me with a meme recently. At least I think they did. I can’t find the link anywhere anymore. No matter. It allows me to post seven songs I’m listening to. Why seven? Fuck knows. I’m not the person who made it up. I really should do 9 songs as per my moniker but that would remind me too much of that hideous Michael Winterbottom film. Seven it is so. I also made a Muxtape of the songs.
Times New Viking - Drop-Out
I’ve no idea why so many bands this year chose to record their songs with dirty crackling cables and lo-fi swerve but it sounds pretty good to me. For a song with such brevity of length, it really should be starting to annoy me a little bit but alas, this tune from Times New Viking is a sixty five second cracker. [Myspace]

There’s been so much great music to digest lately and June’s podcast is the perfect format to showcase it all. I Scream Ice Cream - Trust Tissue
I hate it when people combine the word electro and rock together. Instantly, I get images of fashionable rockers playing with Korgs, heavily distorted guitars, wailing and painfully shit music. Kinda like Queen Kong that one time I saw them. But “electro-rock” is what this is and this Copenhagen band do it rather well. No distortion included. [Myspace]
