Tonight’s sizey stories - On The Hour via nialler9 November 20th, 2008 at 13:08

image Chris Morris is a genius. Reason #1327. Warp Records are releasing Chris Morris’ satirical news show on a deluxe 4 CD package featuring all episodes and previously unheard content on the 24th of November. On the Hour was a radio precursor to the televised brilliance of ‘The Day Today’ and I believe the show was the first appearance of one Alan Partridge. There’s even a website with a podcast running until Christmas. Download from Bleep or iTunes. If you like this try: Chris Morris - ‘Motherbanger’ (Pixies parody) South Park rips on Bono...

Merriweather Post Pavilion - tentative excerpts via nialler9 November 18th, 2008 at 01:14

image I’m going full-on fanboy in anticipation of the new Animal Collective album and these two 90 second clips are doing nothing to halt my expectation. Someone I know whose heard it hasn’t helped. Panda Bear’s stamp is all over it as expected. If the first two links are down (and they probably will be), go to the alternative link. Bluish [Alt link] Also Frightened [Alt link] One song I’m really looking forward to hearing recorded is ‘Brother Sport’. Listen to it live. It’s already amazing. Halloween mixtapes? via nialler9 October 31st, 2008 at 13:16

image Forget trying to shoehorn songs with vaguely relevant titles to the season into a classifiable Halloween playlist for cool peer points. Matt Ear Farm takes it back to the old school with this mix of songs from horror soundtracks. What could be more creepy, scary or eerie than songs which soundtracked Halloween, Friday the 13th, Psycho, The Omen, Candyman, Poltergeist and more? Respect to Matt. I heartily recommend Darragh’s Frightening the living shite outta meself post also. Happy All Hallows Eve folks. 1. “Main Title and First Victim” by John Williams (from Jaws) 2. “Halloween” by John Carpenter (from Halloween) 3. “Moments of Terror” by Harry Manfredini (from Friday the 13th) 4. “The Knife” by Royal Scottish National Orchestra (from Psycho) 5. “Musica...

Can you judge a grandmother’s love by giving it 2.5 mics? via nialler9 October 19th, 2008 at 11:47

image “You can’t judge me on this because it’s a reflection of my heart and soul. It’s like judging a grandmother’s love. Can you judge a grandmother’s love by giving it 2.5 mics, or saying that it only sold a million?”–Kanye West, directly after the first unveiling of Heartbreak & 808s Master Jeff Weiss was at the listening party for Kanye’s new album along with 40 naked models. As for the production aesthetic, think about an El-P I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead-type blur of sound and darkness: a Goliath stomp of stadium-sized, marrow-disintegrating noise. But rather than use 9 Inch Nails/Bomb Squad as the starting point, it’s rooted in Michael Jackson, Prince, Cameo, Morris Day, a little KLF/Utah Saints hip-hop house-type stuff and maybe even TV on the Radio’s...

image This is where you’ll find linkage to things that don’t fit anywhere else. Bon Iver has a free live Myspace Transmissions EP for download. I really should listen to more of Egoeccentric’s Hangover mixtapes. How about these few : David O’ Doherty, Chk Chk Chk, The Chromatics, loads more. Matt Vinyl has a great B-sides remix podcast. The Catchup Mashup - August 20th via nialler9 August 20th, 2008 at 13:49

image I’ve done a few of these before but I want to be Damien Mulley so I think I’ll start doing regular link roundups. This is where you’ll find linkage to things that don’t fit anywhere else. Pascal’s Country Sounds has another mixtape including this tune by Colder which I also had on a mixtape a few years back. I may post it here soon. Check out a collab from Hervé, A-Trak and Cadence Weapon @ Discobelle. Anyone digging Air France? I’ve been listening to their EP but haven’t decided whether it’s coffee table muck or good chillout pop. Super Extra Bonus Party will be releasing a remix album as a free download in October. Here’s the poster for the launch on October 10th which will feature The Vinny Club, R.S.A.G, T-Woc, Nouveaunoise,...

Opening the Shutter 14-08-08 via McAWilliams Photoblog August 14th, 2008 at 14:17

image So here it is my attempt to open your eyes to other amazing posts to be found on the internet. Everyone else is doing them so why can’t I. I decided, since I am primarily a photoblog, to keep that theme going and unlike others who announce the links (fluffy links, red links, green links etc) I decided my parts of my camera could be used for the title, many thanks to those on twitter who also came up with some gems. So I am proud to announce the first installment of “Opening the shutter” So what have I found this week - Top of the list goes to Damien Mulley who has proudly announced the first Irish Web Awards on October 11th, hopefully I may be playing a small role in helping him out agin with this one, more on that as it happens. The second thing that caught my Shutter...

Dilla Ghost Doom - Sniperlite via nialler9 July 22nd, 2008 at 13:29

image If you as nerdish as me, you will have went to the Stones Throw site over the weekend to pick up those Ghostface Killah / MF Doom collab tracks under the release name of Sniperlite. This site wasn’t accepting non-US credit cards then but it is now! Get those tracks. They are from 2005 and feature the pair rhyming over instrumentals from J Dilla’s Donuts. Grab them. Here’s what it sounds like:...

Thursday’s Fare via John Keyes' Weblog July 17th, 2008 at 22:24

image Exxon are such a shower of wankers, whatever about promoting their fossil fuel business and trying to debunk global warming, now the fuckers don’t give a shit about helping create toxic toys for children. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have been given the go ahead to test a theory that if proven will aid the rape of the oceans. They are going to see if fish will behave the same as Pavlov’s dog. Hmm, yes I’ll put them in my wankers category too. Would you like an action figure/doll of yourself? Well BE A DOLL makes that dream a reality. It’s a pity the dolls are vinyl, but it’s a nice idea. Or you could create a model of yourself in Lego. Storm water management system, Saitama, Japan. Holy shit this stormwater management system in Saitama, Japan is...

Did you know? via nialler9 July 17th, 2008 at 11:20

image Ireland’s favourite EU commissioner Charlie McCreevy is responsible for the proposal to extend EU copyright law by 45 years under the proviso of helping ’struggling session players’ to earn money when they’re old. The proposal has now passed the commission and is on the way to the parliament. What does this really mean? Well, extending copyright under the noble cause of helping “thousands of anonymous session musicians who contributed to sound recordings in the late fifties and sixties” as McCreevy puts it, also allows record labels to live off these artists for another 45 years while simultaneously extending the barrier that legally allows creativity in the form of sampling and collage-based works. In the US, a similar law has already been passed but “fair...

Music Video Bacchanalia via nialler9 July 16th, 2008 at 12:54

image Just time today to share some embeds of videos I’ve been watching this week. By the way, Egoeccentric have been doing a great job lately and have posted a few of the videos below already so be sure to check them out and their hangover mixtapes too. On with the program. Radiohead - House of Cards You’ve probably seen this by now. It uses a technique involving lasers and no cameras were used. You may not have seen the interesting making of video however. Girl Talk - Feed the Animals videos Some dude has gone and made visual representations of two tracks from Girl Talk’s albums using the original music videos. This is quite cool. ‘Still here’ Another Girl Talk video and loads more after the jump. ‘Shut the Club Down’ Fonzworth Bentley -...

A thing to do - A musical genealogy via nialler9 July 5th, 2008 at 14:09

image “List your favourite record from every year you’ve been alive.” This is probably the nerdiest thing I’ve ever done but it was an interesting exercise. The idea was taken from here, here and here. In order to help you pick your favourites, you can use the extensive Wikipedia pages, the critics list at Pazz & Jop or with the help of an 1001 Albums to Hear Before you Die book. Here is my musical genealogy in list form. Explanations of my choices after the jump. 1982 Michael Jackson - Thriller 1983 R.E.M - Murmur 1984 RUN DMC - RUN DMC 1985 Kate Bush - Hounds of Love 1986 Beastie Boys - Licenced to Ill 1987 Michael Jackson - Bad 1988 Pixies - Surfer Rosa | Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions… 1989 Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique 1990 Jane’s...

Tuesday Links via John Keyes' Weblog June 30th, 2008 at 23:32

image I haven’t had a bunch-o-links in a while but some interesting stuff crossed my line of vision today and I thought rather than just burying them in one of my bookmark buckets, I’d share them. First up is a really cool blog Darren pointed out, by a man who discovered there was an underground German bunker in his garden on Jersey. Not as relevant to Ireland as the states but would you get your child circumcised? A man asks his mother what she thinks. For what it’s worth I say “No way”, just keep him clean and you’ll be fine. Jeffrey Zeldman writes a nice piece on moving dwelling/office, boy has he been through a lot there. While doing a quick browse of MySpace Music I came across Bat For Lashes and really liked this video: YouTube Video Would the...

Two things to do today via nialler9 June 27th, 2008 at 14:07

image Image from Shellshock Rock designed to blind you for the weekend. Alongside the showing of rare music documentaries Last Night of The Funnel, The Stars Are Underground and Shellshock Rock Underground are running an exhibition in the basement of Road on Fade street focusing on the changes of independent music over the last 15 years. Get down to the launch at 6.30pm for a STREET PARTY in Fade St with music from Mici Durnin (Maximum Joy) & David Beattie. Also, MP3Hugger has tired of promoting unsigned artists and seeing them get no just monetary rewards so he decided to curate an indie compilation called Indiecater. The idea was “to...

WALE - W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E and mixtapes via nialler9 June 9th, 2008 at 13:04

image Washington DC’s Wale has been causing a stir with his mixtapes of late and this video seals the deal. A freestyle over Justice’s D.A.N.C.E turns into a multimedia homage to Seinfeld, Star Wars, Gnarls Barkley using the original video as a stylistic jumping off point. In fact his new mixtape The Mixtape About Nothing has a distinctly Seinfeld theme from the cover art to the samples to the rap thematics. If you are looking for a reference for his voice, it reminds me of Lupe Fiasco. It features production from Mark Ronson and appearances from Clipse’s Pusha T, The Roots, Bun B and Lil Wayne. You can listen and download here. MP3 Wale - W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E. (from 100 Miles and Runnin’) Wale - The Feature Heavy Song feat. Pusha T, Bun B and Tre from UCB (from A...

The nialler9 catchup mashup via nialler9 June 8th, 2008 at 19:18

image I had an absolute joyful holiday away from Ireland so it’s straight back in with an attempt to summarise the last ten days of links, news, songs and videos. Ever wonder what happened to The Peth, the Super Furry side-project? A string of UK dates including the Green Man festival precedes the release of the album The Golden Mile on September 1st. There are new songs on the Myspace page and they have a new website. The band includes SFA drummer Dafydd Ieuan and also features the actor Rhys Ifans who let us not forget was the original vocalist for the Super Furries before Gruff came along. One song is titled ‘69 Fanny Street’ which is piquing my interest. Nialler9’s favourite Baltimore rapper Height recently recorded a live session with SnowGhost. They’ve got...

Youtube-off extravaganza via nialler9 May 27th, 2008 at 20:57

image Exciting times in our house yesterday as Rollie and his DJ Weezl came over to record some vocals for an upcoming Bonus Party MK II joint. As the evening rolled into the small hours, the focus descended into a youtube-off. Rollie and Weezl told us about some crazy MCs and we shared funny youtube shit. There are too many nuggets here, I couldn’t help but share. Crazy MCs Pitman is a Nottingham MC who styles himself as a coal miner, and appears on stage and in videos dressed in a British Coal jacket, a hard hat with a lamp and a flask of tea. His face is often covered in coal dust. Here’s his freestyle over Roots Manuva’s ‘Witness the Fitness’. His album is called It Takes a Nation of Tossers.. Pitman - Witness the Pitness And his video for ‘Girls’...

Edel Coffey leaving Phantom FM via nialler9 April 24th, 2008 at 13:55

image Tune into Phantom tomorrow morning from 10am to 12 noon to catch Edel Coffey’s last show for Phantom FM. Consistently the only morning, day-time radio show I’d tune into, Access All Areas was the best thing going on the radio at that time. It seems Edel is going back to work for in the newspaper business. Best of luck to Edel and her......

Got more lyrics then the church got ‘Ooh Lords!’ via nialler9 April 21st, 2008 at 18:27

image Lyrics in post - Madvillian (MF Doom) - Accordion I’m dumbfounded how good these mixes are. Brooklyn’s The Rub have compiled 21 volumes of hip-hop, one for each year from 1979 to 1999. It serves as an in-depth aural history of the genre. I’ve already heard about 4 tunes from 1992 I’d heard before, loved and forgotten about. The early volumes take in the birth of hip-hop with Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Spoonie G and Run DMC. Then we have early 90’s mix of gangsta rap (Ice Cube, NWA) to more conscious rap (A Tribe Called Quest, Gang-Starr) before the late nineties domination of Jay-Z, Outkast, DMX and Wu-Tang Clan. Of course, there’s plenty of forgotten gold in-between. The Rub’s Hip-Hop Mixes Thanks to Weareie for the......
