A birthday present: Waxy Cocktail mix via nialler9 November 11th, 2008 at 11:50

image Hey the blog is three years old today! There are two ways to interpret this: 1) Major loser 2) Music fanatic (Is there really any difference?). So here’s a special post for a special day. I asked DJ Robbie Coffey to once again to put his skills to use for the occasion and this is what he concocted. Just check out the sweet tracklisting, it’s full of killer grime, dubstep and hip-hop and has some of my favourite tunes from the past few years. Buraka Som Sistema ft M.I.A - ‘Sound of Kuduro’ via nialler9 November 8th, 2008 at 17:09

image The honour of Fabric’s first proper artist album release has fallen to Portugal’s Buraka Som Sistema and their debut album Black Diamond. Their sound has been invariably described as electro ghettotech and Euro baile funk but in reality, it is rooted in Kudoro - a genre which is thriving in Lisbon’s suburbs but was born in Angola. It shares tone and rhythm with that break-off track from earlier in the year DJ Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’. The album, Black Diamond is well worth a look if these tunes (one featuring the “retired” M.I.A and another Pongolove) take your fancy. Y.A.P.P.R. via nialler9 February 22nd, 2008 at 14:48

image Or Yet Another Paper Planes Remix Pedro alerted me to this DFA remix of “Paper Planes” after my Holy Fuck remix post earlier this month. I’ve since dug up with full-length version of it which will feature on Paper Planes: Homeland Security Remixes which also includes remixes by Afrikan Boy & Rye Rye, Big Bun & Rich Boy, Scottie B and a DJ Eli remix of “Bamboo Banger”. The Holy Fuck remix doesn’t feature, neither does the recent Adrock Beasties remix though. This is another superb reworking as you’d expect from Murphy and Goldsworthy. Holy Fuck remix MIA’s “Paper Planes” via nialler9 February 6th, 2008 at 12:22

image Full credit to Gorilla vs. Bear for this one. I stole it because it’s so good. Holy Fuck remixes MIA. I love it cos it appropriates MIA into the Holy Fuck sound and thus, becomes like a new offering from the band. Really looking forward to the gig! MP3 MIA - Paper Planes (Holy Fuck Remix)...

Favourite Songs of 2007 via nialler9 December 7th, 2007 at 19:43

image I relish compiling lists. So much so that I ended up with a list of 75 songs from this year on a longlist. So for the sake of your attention-span and as recommendation reminders here are my top 25 songs of 2007. I’ll talk about the track when it warrants it or if I’ve talked about it before, I’ll be lazy and quote myself. Link to the MP3, stream or video can be found on the title of the song. 25. Modeselektor - Dark Side of the Sun My favourite track from Happy Birthday although it took a few months for me to settle on it, like a lottery ball in front of a hapless individual on Winning Streak. 24. Zach Condon - Venice “The downtempo electronic tones may surprise you if you’ve been enjoying his Balkan ways..”. (June) 23. Caribou - Melody Day (Four Tet...

MIA / Battles mashup by Diplo via nialler9 October 15th, 2007 at 12:25

image Considered to be one of the highlights of Diplo’s recent Pitchfork mix, this mashup of Battles “Atlas” and MIA’s “Boyz” has been put on Mad Decent by Diplo. It’s not a perfect version but I applaud Diplo for getting the two to meet up in a nice compromise even though he says: the battles one dont go anywhere i made it in 5 minutes and its totally out of tune- on its own though - that battles joint BANGS! there just wasnt enough room between the aliens singin to make a good edit! A reckon it’s a toss-up between “Atlas” and “Wham City” for song of the year but these things will probably change. MP3 Diplo - Battles Atlas / MIA Boyz mashup...

MIA - Paper Planes (Esau Mwamwaya version) via nialler9 September 17th, 2007 at 17:35

image MIA’s “Paper Planes” is the alternative tune of the summer for those who managed to avoid that Umbrella song so it’s not surprising that there are different versions and remixes coming out at the moment. The first version (which Diplo used in that Pitchfork mix) features additional rhymes from Bun B and Rich Boy and it’s great but I’m not going to post it here because of the wonky time change in the version going around (if you want it get it @ J’ai la cassette à la maison) . The Esau Mwamwaya version moves the song into East African terroritory with a full on African language vocal facelift (Chichewa possibly, my ignorance of African languages is appalling). MIA can’t be heard until the last verse but you’ll hardly notice as this...

Podcast 6: August Electric Picnic special via nialler9 August 27th, 2007 at 11:59

image I think this is the upbeat podcast I’ve been promising all summer. As the sun finally shone this weekend, it puts us in good stead for the next when we descend on Stradbally once again for the festival of the year. So to get you all pumped about the Electric Picnic which starts Friday, this month’s podcast is all Electric Picnic artists. It can be the soundtrack to your preparations: frantically searching for timetables online, buying another tent because you weren’t arsed taking down that huge 12 man tent last year, deciding whether to brave it without wellies or the last minute dash for toilet roll. I’m looking forward to seeing two sets from the Beastie Boys so much so we started this podcast with a favourite of mine from the NY men. Enjoy and see you down the...

Jimmy Aaja! via nialler9 August 15th, 2007 at 10:04

image I’ll assume you’ve all seen the new video for “Jimmy” by MIA by now. When I first heard the tune I thought it was a mix of the bass from The Gossip’s Standing in the Way of Control and that tune Madonna sampled Abba tune “Hung Up”. I soon found out it was neither of these things as the obvious Bollywood vibe was the source of the cover. Here is the original from a film called “Disco Dancer” featuring an enchanting dancer, a coward called Jimmy and a wall of disco lights. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sjam_ygv69Y If you want the mp3, Justin can hook you up. For fans of MIA…Santogold via nialler9 August 7th, 2007 at 16:02

image Standing beside her in the photo is Santogold, a Brooklyn based artist who draws from the same genres as Ms Maya Arulpragasam. Her music is a diverse mix of grime, hip-hop, ragga, dancehall and electro, hence the comparisons. Her myspace also says basement rock and Bananarama-soundclash which I like the sound of. She has toured with MIA, was on that filthy Lindsay Lohan song and has had Disco D, Switch, Sinden, Freq Nasty, Diplo, Radioclit, Naeem Juwan of Spank Rock amongst others produce her tracks. So for those who need a break from Kala goodness, check these songs out. First up, is “Creator”, a grimey, wobbling track that Lady Sovereign might have been comfortable with but with a much better delivery and a catchy chorus. “Shove it” is a summery reggae joint...
