Hey the blog is three years old today! There are two ways to interpret this: 1) Major loser 2) Music fanatic (Is there really any difference?). So here’s a special post for a special day. I asked
DJ Robbie Coffey to
once again to put his skills to use for the occasion and this is what he concocted. Just check out the sweet tracklisting, it’s full of killer grime, dubstep and hip-hop and has some of my favourite tunes from the past few years.

I relish compiling lists. So much so that I ended up with a list of 75 songs from this year on a longlist. So for the sake of your attention-span and as recommendation reminders here are my top 25 songs of 2007. I’ll talk about the track when it warrants it or if I’ve talked about it before, I’ll be lazy and quote myself. Link to the MP3, stream or video can be found on the title of the song.
25. Modeselektor - Dark Side of the Sun
My favourite track from Happy Birthday although it took a few months for me to settle on it, like a lottery ball in front of a hapless individual on Winning Streak.
24. Zach Condon - Venice
“The downtempo electronic tones may surprise you if you’ve been enjoying his Balkan ways..”. (June)
23. Caribou - Melody Day (Four Tet...

Wow. There was no better way to kick off my invigorating temporary unemployment and the four night run of gigs this week (Modeselektor, MJEX/SEBP, 65 Days of Static and Animal Collective) than the absolute banger of a show last night from the German duo. Myself and Mike danced our Buckfast off with the most enthusiastic crowd I’ve seen in Dublin for quite some time. It helps that the Tivoli is a great venue for a wee dance and that Modeselektor were dropping great tune after great tune, hosing the crowd in champagne, buckets of ice and water. They even passed out their clutch of free beer to the front row, nice chaps they are.
The highlights for myself were “2000007″, “Weed wid da Macka”, the eruption when “Kill Bill no.4″ was played,...

What an amazing picture! If you look closely at the screen, she’s playing with FRACTALS! What a trippy office!
Anyway, here is nine songs for your bank holiday weekend.
Another high-quality Four Tet remix, I’ve become convinced he can turn his remix hand to any genre and we will come out spoiled. This track is a 9-minute menacing synth-driven opus that allows intricate Battles guitar lines to satellite an ever-pulsing beat.
Battles - Tonto (Four Tet remix)
Diplo remixing THE DECEMBERISTS!?! That doesn’t sound right and truthfully this remix is fairly weak by Diplo’s standards. I’ve included it more out of curiousity than quality. There are other remixes for this single from Junior Boys and Rob da Bank also.

Regular readers will know my enthuasism for German glitch-techno duo Modeselektor. I have up until now neglected to mention their new album Happy Birthday! which came out last week officially. Where Hello Mom! revelled in the barrage of techno, hip-hop, ambient and electro, Happy Birthday! takes its cue in from the vestiges of early 90s techno. As a result, the tracks are longer, feature less glitch and more booming bass.
Take opener “Godspeed”, a simple but potent buildup of bass-heavy, low-frequency sounds which sounds utterly thrilling. Or “Hyper Hyper”, the Scooter-aping pisstake featuring Otto von Schirach in which we found out what Scooter would have sounded if they were versed in musicology and had an ear for a good synth. Answer: Surprisingly good (but...

Keep an eye on this page for updates. So far there is the Beastie Boys, Dizzee Rascal, Modeselektor (Thom Yorke and Maximo Park on the new album! WTF!?), DJ Mehdi, Uffie feat Feadz and more. Also on the New Mixes site are other Sonar Sets from Kode 9 and the SpaceApe, Nettle, Skream as well as the Skream Essential Mix . Enjoy.

Modeselektor have contributed to the third volume of the Boogy Bytes mix series on bPitch Control and true to form, it’s bit of a banger. 27 tracks taking in lots of great tunes from the likes of James Holden, Spank Rock, Flying Lotus, Nathan Fake, Skream, Luke Vibert, ??-ziq, Radiohead and Burial.
Two of my favourites are the two Sirius Mo tracks. Just what you’d expect from the wasted German Youth DJ team. Catch them at Oxegen if you’ve sold your soul!

Totally forgot to mention this… on the 8th and 9th of March the Modeselektor DJ Team are hitting Electric City, Dublin and Fast Eddies, Cork respectively.
Going to be one hell of a night if it’s even half as good as their Electric Picnic performance!
Nice video here to sate your appetite:

French hip-hoppers and all around mentalists, TTC released their third album 3615 a few weeks back. This is no regular hip hop album though and certainly has little in common with most people’s peception of French hip hop. It’s closer to the electro sound of Berlin’s Modeselektor who produce the album’s closer, returning the favour of TTC’s appearance on Hello Mom’s “Dancing Box”.
The album is littered with vintage sounding synths and electro beats and of course, TTC’s unique rapping styles. It opens with the one-two punch of “Quand Je Claque mes Doigts” and an ode to their city with “Paris Paris”. It just gets better from there. “Telephone” sounds like the kind of song Diplo has been knocking out...

It’s been a while since I made a mixtape (about a year and a half) but this one’s been in planning mode since last summer. But it’s finally finished and up for your delectation. We’ve got ambient electronica, electro Remixes, hip hop, dubstep (including a dubstep version of Justin Timberlake’s “My Love”) and more. 16 songs, just over an hour - all ready to be burned on to a CD or your iPod. Thanks to Niall O Leary for passing on the Geoim track and Co for the production tips. Enjoy and let me know what you guyses think!

It’s Saturday night and before I go out I want to share some music that I meant to blog about a long time ago. Modeselektor are from Berlin and make banging electronic tunes. But these guys are generous and also throw in hip hop, electro and ambient arrangements into their productions. Their debut album ‘Hello Mom’ came to my attention when I heard ‘The Rapanthem’ on Donal Dineen’s show about 4 or 5 months back. That particular song takes a sample of Ol Dirty Bastard’s Got ya Money and splices it on top of a great rising synth progression complete with handclaps and dodgy spoken samples.
The nicely titled ‘Kill Bill Vol.4′ is pure electro rave genius. Simple and extremely danceable. ‘Silikon’ features Sasha Perera...
