Help the cap’n via inuit panda scarlet carwash November 17th, 2008 at 11:16

So tell me, what should I think of the band Tilly & The Wall? I nearly went to see them when they came here recently; I decide against it because seeing a band just because they have a 30 Years War general in their name and attractive (if garishly dressed) young ladies on their poster is not always a good idea. But then I read about them in local music magazine The State. The detail I was most struck by was that instead of having a drummer, they handle percussion by tap-dancing on stage. This must surely make them either the greatest live band ever, or a band so astonishingly bad that the freakshow aspect alone would justify the price of admission. So tell me, readers, what did I...

Phoning it in? Coldplay’s new EP plagiarised reviewed via nialler9 November 13th, 2008 at 19:55

image I had a chuckle to myself when I read Hot Press’ Irish exclusive review of Coldplay’s Prospekt’s March EP (Irish exclusive: Haven’t they heard of the internet?). In the review, Francis Jones says the EP has: …everything from blustering rock riffs and crackling synths to Indian tablas and even a cameo performance from a hip-hop icon.. I had a sense of deja-vu and realised I had read something very similar recently. No matter, maybe it was a coincidence? While perusing my RSS feed earlier in the week, I came across a review from The Sun newspaper by Gordon Smart. Smart says Prospekt’s March EP has: Thumping hip-hop jams, thundering metal workouts, Indian tablas and colliery brass bands all jostle for space.. There are a lot of similarities in that...

Giveaway: Rodrigo and Gabriela CDs/DVDs via nialler9 November 13th, 2008 at 15:25

image I remember seeing Rodrigo Y Gabriela on Grafton Street every now and again about six or seven years back as I’m sure some of you might also recall. I remember seeing then in a small theatre show in Newbridge about five years ago and being blown away by their considerable skill. Foc is a great album too for a pair of busking Mexicans in Ireland. Of course, in the last few years, they have left Ireland and have been playing on US late night talks shows like Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and have been pretty much gigging worldwide since. Their new live album showcases their skill in arena most suited to them. It was recorded in Tokyo and so is called Live in Japan. The album also comes with a five-track live DVD of the gig. I’ve been kindly given 5 CDs...

Little Joy (A non Gay Dad-related post) via nialler9 November 10th, 2008 at 16:06

image The best album I’ve heard in the last month or so is easily the just-released eponymous album by Little Joy. The band are notable for being a new project by the drummer of The Strokes, Fabrizio Moretti. Although he only provides backing vocals to main singer Rodrigo Amarant and more sporadically Binki Shapiro, the stamp of The Strokes is all over it, albeit a mostly acoustic one. It sounds like it was recorded in Hawaii such is the breezy, carefree tone of the music. It was recorded in LA as it turns out, still polar opposite to Moretti’s normal New York home. The band is named after a cocktail lounge just down the street from the place they recorded the album. Little Joy is an apt moniker for a 11 songs and 31 minute LP of understated and winsome beauty. It was pretty hard...

Neon Neon live @ Tripod via nialler9 November 5th, 2008 at 15:07

image I first mentioned Neon Neon back in April 2007 when Gruff and Boom Bip posted ‘Trick or Treat’ and since then Stainless Style has been released and has become one of my top 5 albums of 2008. So to say I was looking forward to their Irish gig last night is an understatement. The “biographical show / election special” (to quote Gruff) was packed. It was one of two large near-to-full capacity gigs happening on a Tuesday night: MGMT in Ambassador and Neon Neon in Tripod. I wonder how Ida Maria in Whelan’s fared? One of the subconscious delights I have of gig-going is watching the reaction of the security personnel charged with protecting the stage and crowd down front during a performance. Mick Jagger could be sticking his willy in the frets of Keith...

Lerdahl, part 1 via icecube's keep November 4th, 2008 at 12:22

image (serialized from this tigsource thread) I couldn’t find any nice stuff on-line, but I’ve been meaning to properly go through this stuff myself for a while, so I’m happy to have the excuse to learn something about it (Disclaimer: all of what I’m saying is a filtered version of what Lerdahl says in his book, both through my misunderstandings, and my understandings of what might be useful to Muku in his PG music program (This is primarily a response to a request made by him for info on this stuff, but of course I’d love if other people were to chip in and comment)). TIME-SPAN REDUCTION So if we have two chords, A and B, say, in progression, Lerdahl puts them into a special type of tree according to which seems to be the stronger of the two, (”a right...

Live in concert: Yungchen Llamo via inuit panda scarlet carwash November 2nd, 2008 at 23:22

This was at the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire. I had wanted to go the Éthiopiques again, but they were sold out, so we took a chance with this Tibetan lady. This was on in the Monkstown Church venue. A sinking feeling manifested in my stomach. From the moment the support act (some Tibetan bloke with an Irish woman singer and some other people of indeterminate nationality) started. The singer opened with an unaccompanied song in Irish about the plight of the Tibetans, and nearly burst our eardrums when she hit the high loud notes. This was not her fault, but the Monkstown Church sound munter had obviously turned everything up to eleven and then headed off to the pub, suggesting that we would be in for a treat when Ms Llamo (or Ms Yungchen) took the stage. The rest of the...

Lerdahl-based Chord Progression Generator via icecube's keep November 2nd, 2008 at 22:23

I’ll be posting some articles about the theory of Lerdahl very very soon. In anticipation of them (and to put something up so I can submit it to the Haskell Activity Report), here’s my implementation of a toy-model based roughly around his theory. It’s restricted to the process of chord generation. Here’s a simple playing by me of a chord-sequence that it produced. Here’s a midi example that it produced by itself when I had it more developed. There’s still a reasonable amount of work to be done on it, but it’s at a stage where it’s presentable. Anyway, the current version of the haskell source code is here. Hopefully I’ll have more developed versions up in the......

Basic Haskell Midi file output via icecube's keep October 7th, 2008 at 21:21

The source file is here. To produce a major scale in ghci, do something like the following: :l miditest createMidi "test.mid" [50,52,54,55,57,59,61,62] I even managed to do something useful with this sort of code, that I’ll post some time in the near......

The Final Countdown, Part 4: Some Product via inuit panda scarlet carwash October 31st, 2008 at 23:11

I have been talking about the emotional last ever meetup of the Bowlie Forum. Previous episodeThey were giving away a record to all Final Countdown attendees, a 10' featuring two tracks each by Wintergreen and the Gresham Flyers, with each band contributing one original song and one cover. I liked the covers here more, partly for their bold audacity. The Gresham Flyers' cover starts off sounding like a Kinks album track, but then turns into 'Are "Friends" Electric?', with Sharon on robotic Gary Numan vocals. This storms. Wintergreen, meanwhile, play some 'Somewhere In The Night' (some tune by Smog), only with the track retuned so that it becomes an electropop anthem. Apparently this is the only recorded track from a proposed concept album of electropop covers of songs from some doomy Smog...

Tama the station master cat via Anthony McG October 31st, 2008 at 12:35

image This cat is the station master at Kishi Station in Kinokawa, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. In lieu of a salary, the railway provides Tama with free cat food. Of course there’s the hat as well. Passenger numbers are actually up for the station. In January 2008, Tama was promoted to “super station master” in a ceremony attended by the president of the company and the mayor; as a result of her promotion, she is “the only female in a managerial position” in the company. Ya gotta love the Japanese. More on......

The Final Countdown, Part 3: More Bands via inuit panda scarlet carwash October 30th, 2008 at 21:21

image I am writing about bands I saw at The Final Countdown, the last ever meetup of the Bowlie Forum. Last episode hereBack in July, I met one of the event organisers, and he was talking about the bands who were going to be playing. "We've got The Deirdres playing," he said. "They don't really have any link to the Bowlie Forum, but I reckon people will like them. They are basically a load of teenage girls who jump around and shout a lot"."Something for the dads", I thought. As it happened, the Deirdres had a few blokes in their line-up, but the girls are a bit more noticeable. They were very much the kind of band who jump around and shout. They also like to stop playing and have somewhat staged arguments on (er) stage. And they do formation dancing and stuff. So yeah, a lot of fun, from the...

The Hours - The Underground, Dublin via Anthony McG October 30th, 2008 at 19:55

image The Hours are one of my favourite bands at the moment. Tuesday night was their first gig in Ireland following the release of the debut album ‘Narcissus Road’. I actually booked the tickets while I was in the US and was really looking forward it. The band didn’t disappoint. While the crowd may have been a bit sparse, each tune was bashed out with vigour. The new tunes, especially ‘Think Again’, sounded great and the new album sounds like a winner. If you enjoy indie rock then I’d advise you to check them out on: their official site and MySpace....

The Final Countdown, Part 2: Bands via inuit panda scarlet carwash October 28th, 2008 at 22:31

image I am discussing the last ever meetup of the Bowlie Forum, back in August. Awesome. See part 1 hereThe first band was The Gresham Flyers. It was something of a relief that they weren't rubbish, as their bassist Thom is one of my Frank's APA pals, and interaction could otherwise have become a bit difficult. So yes, they were better than bad – they were good! If I were going to play the genre classification game then I reckon I would call their music motorik indie. In fact, yes, the idea of their playing on the same bill as Hawkwind (as apparently once almost happened) would not be completely ridiculous.there was also DJing between the bandsWintergreen are almost like the official house band of the Bowlie Forum, featuring so many Bowlies in their line-up that it is a wonder that I have...

More DEAF Freebies - Mad EP, Ebola, Ed Devane via nialler9 October 20th, 2008 at 13:08

image Taking place in Andrew’s Lane from 11pm this Thursday, !Kaboogie and Foggy Notions present the Dublin debut of Canadian Matthew Pears aka Mad EP. His music takes in strands of from hip-hop and jungle and is notable for his use of live cello on tracks. Some of his music sounds like Owen Pallett-esque baroque pop through a glitchy blender. Nice. Check his blog. Ebola has been knocking out wonky electronic music on Wrong Music for years now dabbling in breakcore, gabber and recently, dubstep except with his own unique cosmic take on the genre.
