Can you judge a grandmother’s love by giving it 2.5 mics? via nialler9 October 19th, 2008 at 11:47

image “You can’t judge me on this because it’s a reflection of my heart and soul. It’s like judging a grandmother’s love. Can you judge a grandmother’s love by giving it 2.5 mics, or saying that it only sold a million?”–Kanye West, directly after the first unveiling of Heartbreak & 808s Master Jeff Weiss was at the listening party for Kanye’s new album along with 40 naked models. As for the production aesthetic, think about an El-P I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead-type blur of sound and darkness: a Goliath stomp of stadium-sized, marrow-disintegrating noise. But rather than use 9 Inch Nails/Bomb Squad as the starting point, it’s rooted in Michael Jackson, Prince, Cameo, Morris Day, a little KLF/Utah Saints hip-hop house-type stuff and maybe even TV on the Radio’s...

Jape covers Toto’s ‘Africa’ via nialler9 September 8th, 2008 at 11:47

image Richie Egan has bestowed upon us his inspired cover of that seminal 1982 paean ‘Africa’ which he recorded last week. The thing I remember most about Toto are their striking album covers. Toto IV was my favourite cover and that’s the album that ‘Africa’ resides on. As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti, Richie hopes you like it. The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation / I stopped an old man along the way / Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies / He turned to me as if to say, hurry boy, its waiting there for you Oh yeh.. Jape vs Toto - Africa Original video after the jump....

Magic Wands via nialler9 August 13th, 2008 at 13:46

image All the way from Fantasy Island and with a strong penchant for unicorns comes Chris and Dexy aka Magic Wands. They used to play punk separately 2000 miles apart but the duo hooked up in Los Angeles and moved to Chris’ hometown of Nashville and now play dreamy pop music. And it’s niiice. ‘Black Magic’ is a simple psychedelic tune with an undeniable guitar hook and it can only help that they sing in a MGMT-style falsetto while ‘Teenage Love’, (the song which started their friendship after Chris heard it on Dexy’s Myspace) a slow paean to young love which totally reminds me of something else. Anyone? Anyway, 7″ singles of ‘Teenage Love’ and ‘Black Magic’ are available now. Magic Wands - Black Magic Magic Wands -...

Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head via nialler9 August 12th, 2008 at 16:27

image That is hands down one of the best band names I’ve ever heard. A pop culture reference that fits the band’s exuberance so well. While CSS spin off in a 90s rock retread and therefore shedding what made them fun in the first place, these Seattle teenagers are ready and waiting for the electro-pop crown. Some of you will run from these puerile, neon-clad hipster youth and their silly songs and so be it. But after listening to hours of gloomy indie music in my emails, I’m glad this band of teenagers exist. I hope these guys are massive in a year. Their debut album Glistening Pleasure is out and about now in the US. Song titles include ‘Me + Yr Daughter’, ‘Slow Motion Tag Team’, ‘Holding Hands in the Shower’, the best song about...

Roísín Murphy: Perfect Pop via nialler9 October 18th, 2007 at 13:37

image Roísín Murphy’s second solo album Overpowered was released in Ireland last week and it is one of the best Pop albums I’ve heard recently. Granted, I don’t really listen to chart, or pop music but this is the best kind of grown-up pop music. As with albums like Madonna’s Ray of Light, it is tightly produced with excellent instrumentation and strong song-writing from Murphy herself (Oh shit, I inadvertently praised Madonna ) and is has electro coursing through its veins, perfect for dancefloors. Murphy (originally from Wicklow, yes she’s Irish) has always been an interesting character and the Moloko album Things to Make and Do was stellar. In 2005, she made her debut Ruby Blue with avant-electro producer Matthew Herbert. With Overpowered, along with...

New Music: Little Name via nialler9 September 20th, 2007 at 19:02

image Lee Barker started suffering from severe panic attacks when he was 24. It began with a train journey where the train stopped in a dark tunnel. It got progessively worse from there culminating in Barker quitting his job and slowly retreating into the safety of the building he called home in Liverpool for fourteen years. And there he remained. He began to write songs and learn instruments which resulted in him recording an album at home. Fourteen years later, now 37, under the recording moniker Little Name, Barker has been picked up by Maryland indie label Sleepy Records although he still cannot leave his house. They are distributing his album How To Swim And Live, a collection of indie-pop songs not unlike Super Furry Animals’ Gruff fronting Belle and Sebastian. Gorgeous songs they...

Busted: CDWow Hit With €61M Fine, Future In Doubt! via Howl @ The Moon May 30th, 2007 at 19:39

image THE FUTURE of online retailer CDWow is now in doubt after it has been ordered to pay the British and Irish pop industry a record €61 million in damages (£41 million stg). A High Court judge today found in favour of the British music industry against CDWow for alleged illegal imports of CDs and DVDs into the UK from Asia. They would then sell these imports at a lower price than standard retail outlets. It looks as if the lads at CDWow were using this technique to pass on savings to online consumers and make a tidy profit in the process. They would then sell these imports at a lower price than standard retail outlets. Certainly CDWow has been a hugely popular online site here in Ireland, although the parent site is actually a Hong Kong based operation. They were able to offer savings...

St. Etienne - tales from Turnpike House via tinnitus silence September 20th, 2005 at 09:55

I've been listening to this since Friday. Walking to work on a clear, chill September morning, before the daily walks are both done in darkness and the sadness of winter is upon you, I heard 'sun in my morning' for the first time. I knew the album was going to make me happy. It sets up a groove on triangle with acoustic guitar, organ, and brushed hats joining in. A little gem, as Bobby Robson said of Paul Gascoigne. Without the fat and blubbery tears though keeping all the sentimentality. The next track, the longer more ambitious 'milk bottle symphony' starts telling the lives of the residents of the block of flats, the characters we'll continue to meet over the course of the album. It begins with gentle synth pulses and drum machine - while still managing to feel like a slice of classic...
