Phoning it in? Coldplay’s new EP plagiarised reviewed via nialler9 November 13th, 2008 at 19:55

image I had a chuckle to myself when I read Hot Press’ Irish exclusive review of Coldplay’s Prospekt’s March EP (Irish exclusive: Haven’t they heard of the internet?). In the review, Francis Jones says the EP has: …everything from blustering rock riffs and crackling synths to Indian tablas and even a cameo performance from a hip-hop icon.. I had a sense of deja-vu and realised I had read something very similar recently. No matter, maybe it was a coincidence? While perusing my RSS feed earlier in the week, I came across a review from The Sun newspaper by Gordon Smart. Smart says Prospekt’s March EP has: Thumping hip-hop jams, thundering metal workouts, Indian tablas and colliery brass bands all jostle for space.. There are a lot of similarities in that...

Jape for Christmas number one? via nialler9 November 6th, 2008 at 17:59

image There’s a facebook campaign just set up to help Jape’s superb next single ‘Phil Lynott’ get to Nollaig #1. I’d love to see it happen myself. What do you think? Listen to the tune.. “Even though he was tough, you could tell he was kind / and when he took the stage he owned it / and there right in sky was his half opened eye / he’s still winking at girls in the front row.” If you like this try: Cap Pas Cap - We Are Men (thatboytim remix) Jape covers Toto’s ‘Africa’ Video: Jape - ‘I was a Man’ Look. Thought of the Day via nialler9 October 7th, 2008 at 23:56

image Whatever happened to Tom Vek? Vek reminds me of that time in 2005 when music bloggers were starting to exist (including me), everyone posted the latest Phones remix because it was so good and the M.I.A/Diplo mixtape. Let’s take a trip back shall we? Fact: Vek helped christen the best UK music blog going. image This video is probably safe for work for about 45 seconds. After that not so much. Especially if you are adverse to flashing lights (and not the Kanye kind). Yes, you definitely shouldn’t watch this in a work environment. Directed by Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric) in association with Warp Records and Warp Films. Animation by Devin Flynn. Jazz fusion Howard Moon would be proud of via nialler9 September 11th, 2008 at 14:56

Lee Scratch Perry - 45 albums strong via nialler9 August 12th, 2008 at 14:43

image YES 45 ALBUMS STRONG. Repentance is the reggae legend’s latest album, strangely produced by Andrew WK who met him at SXSW in 2006. Naturally, the two hit it off and made the album which features Moby, producer Don Fleming, bassist Josh Werner of Matisyahu, drummer Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt, and “adult entertainer” Sasha Grey. Sounds totally weird. Listen to ‘Pum, Pum’ his club tune which my colleague just remarked sounds like a Flight of the Conchords style parody. It’s not. Just don’t watch the video though as it’s rather embarassing to watch an 72 year old man like Lee in 50 Cent video mode and also slightly offensive. Lee Scratch Perry - Pum Pum Lee Scratch Perry......

Burial’s identity revealed as … anonymous music nerd via nialler9 August 6th, 2008 at 10:50

image Thanks Mercury Music Prize! It’s all your fault! He must have thought he was going to win it or something. Now other anonymous music nerds can’t dream Burial is actually the The KLF AFX Kode 9 Jarvis Cocker The Purple People Eater etc etc ad infinitum. Here’s what William Bevan had to say about his identity in a myspace blog. Hi, For a while there’s been some talk about who I am, but it’s not a big deal. I wanted to be unknown because I just want it to be all about the tunes. Over the last year the unknown thing has become an issue so im not into it any more. I’m a lowkey person and I just want to make some tunes, nothing else. my names Will Bevan, I’m from South London, I’m keeping my head down and just going to finish my next album,...

Boobies via nialler9 July 28th, 2008 at 11:05

image A dose of puerility on Monday Morning but for a good cause. Master Massey and Shyhyy Welly release their debut single on 1st August and all the proceeds of the mammary-obsessed charity release will go towards The Nicole Cahill Fund, who contacted Massey after his appearance on South East Radio. 10 year old Nicole Cahill has been confined to a wheelchair for the last four years, after a coma and a stroke she sustained at the age of six, caused swelling on her brain. Surgeons in New York city are hopeful that ground-breaking surgery could get Nicole back on her feet. Massey and Welly had been looking for a suitable charity but were turned down by the perfect match of The Irish Cancer Society, proving that they had no sense of humour. In the end, the Nicole Cahill Fund stepped in. A...

Galway is a state of mind via nialler9 July 21st, 2008 at 16:03

image Apologies for what I’m about to inflict upon you. Pseudo-hippy HannaH*s Field and her dreadlocked white wannabe-Rasta mate decided to record a song about the pleasures of smoking weed/mouldy hash/doob etc called ‘Puff Puff Give’. These modern day gypsy “warriors of love” give it to us straight. “Use, enhance your mind / Helps the blind / rocks DJs to rhyme on time” and “Good in da brownie, Rice Krispie treat / groovin’, dancin’ in bare feet”. Apparently a guitar, a bongo and a white guy with dreadlocks can establish a new genre called “gypsy reggae”. I can almost hear you wretch as you read this. This is not a joke I assure you. See the website. The indirect result is the best anti-drug propaganda ever made. This one is dedicated to...

Music Video Bacchanalia via nialler9 July 16th, 2008 at 12:54

image Just time today to share some embeds of videos I’ve been watching this week. By the way, Egoeccentric have been doing a great job lately and have posted a few of the videos below already so be sure to check them out and their hangover mixtapes too. On with the program. Radiohead - House of Cards You’ve probably seen this by now. It uses a technique involving lasers and no cameras were used. You may not have seen the interesting making of video however. Girl Talk - Feed the Animals videos Some dude has gone and made visual representations of two tracks from Girl Talk’s albums using the original music videos. This is quite cool. ‘Still here’ Another Girl Talk video and loads more after the jump. ‘Shut the Club Down’ Fonzworth Bentley -...

Neil Young’s Forgotten Detour via nialler9 July 10th, 2008 at 11:44

image Sometimes it’s easy to forget that legends make odd moves too. In 1982, Neil Young released Trans, a synth and vocoder heavy album inspired by his son who had cerebal palsy. Young found that the vocoder elicited a better response than talking when communicating with his son. Check out the awesome live video from Berlin of ‘Sample and Hold’. The audience look scared. At least Young and the guitarist are enjoying themselves. Incidentially, you may have heard this track on the recent Neon Neon mixtape which you should probably get as it contains another legendary musical detour/mishap which is actually amazing. Download the......

Eh Sweden, did you forget something? via nialler9 June 19th, 2008 at 11:55

image Hard luck to the Swedes last night but the Russians were flippin’ awesome. I wouldn’t normally get involved in international football squabbles but Sweden had it coming. Why? For this monstrosity. It’s been 14 long, long years since ‘Cotton Eye Joe‘ became an international novelty hit. Since then the Swedes have given us The Cardigans, Robyn, José Gonzalez, The Knife and now Lykke Li. But they have been hiding a dark secret. Sweden, please tell me why you’ve been keeping the Rednex around on a retainer since then, piling up chart hits for fourteen years? Can you explain why you let them record THIS, ‘Football is Our Religion’, the unofficial Euro 2008 song? “Real geniuses on the grass” indeed… Sample lyric - “The...

Youtube-off extravaganza via nialler9 May 27th, 2008 at 20:57

image Exciting times in our house yesterday as Rollie and his DJ Weezl came over to record some vocals for an upcoming Bonus Party MK II joint. As the evening rolled into the small hours, the focus descended into a youtube-off. Rollie and Weezl told us about some crazy MCs and we shared funny youtube shit. There are too many nuggets here, I couldn’t help but share. Crazy MCs Pitman is a Nottingham MC who styles himself as a coal miner, and appears on stage and in videos dressed in a British Coal jacket, a hard hat with a lamp and a flask of tea. His face is often covered in coal dust. Here’s his freestyle over Roots Manuva’s ‘Witness the Fitness’. His album is called It Takes a Nation of Tossers.. Pitman - Witness the Pitness And his video for ‘Girls’...

Camille - Music Hole via nialler9 March 30th, 2008 at 17:25

image One of the most interesting and unique singers, Camille from France (not to be confused with Camille O’ Sullivan) is back with a new album out this week called Music Hole. A slightly harsh title which means exactly what it says. The new album is largley sung in English using loads of strange vocal techniques so if you’re a fan of Bjork’s Medulla, you’ll love this. In the EPK documentary below Camille displays Celine Dion-esque batshit craziness as she points to her body’s musical holes (complete with sound effects), talks like a baby and is generally, a bit odd. Her music is still cool though. Watch the 18 minute long documentary and catch the video to ‘Gospel With No Lord’ below....

Get to the Chopper! Aagh! The Predator Rap via nialler9 March 13th, 2008 at 17:33

image Flippin’ amazing! True fact: I recently bought the Alien vs Predator boxset, yet still haven’t watched the Predator films since I bought it. This is the impetus required: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovi-djkUgd0 As huge fans of the Predator film, Mouthmaster Murf and DJ Mayhem (Both from up and coming band, The Anomalies) set about creating a rap spliced together over the original movie footage. The project took around 9 months on and off but the finished product is a sight to behold! Enjoy!...

Dublin’s Master of the Universe via nialler9 March 11th, 2008 at 11:55

image I remember travelling on the Arrow train up to Dublin on Saturdays from Kildare when I was 16, to see a couple of mates play an afternoon/evening gig in some dive like the Red Box (before they did it up) or Frazers on O’ Connell Street. It was at these gigs, I became aware of a peculiar character organising the whole thing, who was little bit strange, a little bit eccentric, a little bit mysterious. It turned out he was Aidan Walsh - Master of the Universe, a man who was famous in the 80’s, who recorded albums on the back of the fastest record deal ever in this country, appeared on Irish TV regularly, had a film made about him and who rode into Virgin Megastore on the Quays on a white horse (apparently). You’d see him walking around taking pictures of bands in venues...
